Coronavirus Postponed Your Race? Here’s What to Do Next

Don’t take your chances of catching it. Focus on training harder, instead.

Has the coronavirus made it so you’re unable to race? Have you received postponement notices from the organization putting the race on? If you have, you’ve joined a group of committed runners who want to make the next race they do participate in the best they’ve experienced to date.

You Have the Power to Turn the Experience into a Positive

If you’ve recently received an email or heard the news that the event you trained so hard for is postponed indefinitely, it’s time to turn the situation into a positive one. If you thought you prepared enough for the experience, think again. You’ll have even more time to train for it now that it won’t take place until sometime in the distant future.

We mentioned below what you can do between now and your next racing opportunity.

Stay calm and maintain a sense of normalcy in your routine.

If your city isn’t on lockdown and self-confinement isn’t necessary, you can continue to run around your neighborhood. It’s the best time to do so solo, too, because you’ll want to keep a distance of six feet or more between yourself and other runners.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. It’s important to keep yourself well-hydrated. If you don’t already own a water filter for your faucet, now is the time to invest in one. In some places, everyday supplies such as bottled water sell out fast. If you don’t want the hassle of not having what you need on hand, buy the filter and keep a pitcher of cold drinking water in the fridge. Refill your reusable bottle with it.

Set up a training area in your backyard. Make sure to disinfect it after every use. It’s a good practice to get into year-round, not only when a pandemic is taking place. Maintaining good health through regular exercise is imperative during times like these, so don’t fret, but do be proactive about increasing your amount of physical activity.

Join a group online for racers and keep the conversation open. As you socially isolate, make it a point to stay digitally connected. Find a group on social media or a runner’s website where you can share your thoughts and ask questions of other runners in the group. You’ll feel a sense of community even when you can’t meet-up in person.

Reframe Your Attitude and Make It a Positive Experience for All

No one has a definitive idea of how long the pandemic outbreak will exist. That’s why it’s essential to proceed through the next few weeks with patience and caution. You’ll look forward to your next racing opportunity with renewed enthusiasm. When it does come time for you to run it, you’ll have even more fun than you knew was possible.
