Thanks to a bumper IRONMAN weekend including an IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 distance event, athletes can experience the best Cascais has to offer, starting with a swim in the most spectacular bay in Portugal. Follow up your race with a few days in Lisbon to complete your Portuguese adventure.
This race offers qualifying slots for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.
Swim
The one-loop 1.9 km (1.2 mile) swim starts at Ribeira Beach in Cascais. Known for its huge crowds lining theKeep Reading shore, the course takes athletes around the protected bay of the village and all the way to the Fortaleza at Clube Naval. Athletes arrive at the transition area, located at the Manuel Possolo Hippodrome, through a 630 metres run on a red-carpet. In October the water temperature varies between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius.
Bike
The 90km (56 mile) one loop bike course not only features breathtaking views of the Portuguese Riviera, and the Guincho Beach Road but also the wonderful natural Sintra-Cascais which, because of the recent road improvements, will allow athletes to cycle inside the mountains on roads of rare scenic beauty. The ascent to the mountain adds a point of difficulty to the course but also guarantees a greater distance between athletes, allowing athletes to avoid drafting.
Descending the mountain, the athletes will enjoy a unique feature of the IRONMAN: a lap on the Estoril Formula 1 circuit, then down to the marginal Avenue and the most rolling part of the entire course (last 32km) always with the Tagus River side by side, along the waterfront of the Cascais and Oeiras municipalities.
Elevation gain: 870m
Run
The two loops that make up the 21.1km of the run course starts in Cascais, following the Guincho road along the coast to Cabo Raso and returns back to the heart of Cascais. A challenging course, especially on windy days, which contrasts between the lonely, coastal atmosphere of the Guincho road and the ecstatic crowds in the urban fabric of Cascais. The aid stations, approximately every 2km, are the best company and reference for the pace.
Elevation gain: 113m
