The Windward Half Marathon started in 1980 as a way to build relations between Kailua residents and Marines at the neighboring Marine Corps Base. Today the race includes runners from Kailua, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, the neighbor islands, the continental US, Japan and Australia. The 5K is a straight run on Kainalu Drive.
