ABOUT THIS RACE:
Race Starting Location:
Columbia Distributing, 2525 Southeast 1st Avenue, Canby, OR
The Pioneer Century Annual Bike Ride is a Cycling race in Canby, Oregon consisting of a 103 Miles and 33 Miles and 63 Miles.
The Pioneer Century has a 50-year heritage with the Portland Bicycling Club, formerly known as the Portland Wheelmen Touring Club. The "Pioneer" part of the ride name reflects the history of the Champoeg, Canby, and Molalla areas. Rich farmland and timber brought the pioneers to this area and this same beauty draws cyclists today. The Pioneer Century offers three great routes whether you seek a social ride or personal best: The "Century" part of the name stands for the 100 miles of the longest route options, 103 miles and the metric century 100 km, 63 miles. There's a third option: the metric half century, 33 miles. More information about the ride, including maps, can be found on the PBC website at https://portlandbicyclingclub.com/pioneer/. The net proceeds from the ride help PBC give back to the cycling community.
As a Non-Profit 501(C)3 organization, PBC donates a large portion of its yearly revenue to support cycling generally, safe cycling and programs for youth. Revenue from 2022 made the 2023 donations possible. Earlier this year, donations went to repairs needed on the Banks - Vernonia Trail, and to Community Cycling Center, Bikes for Humanity, Street Trust, Bike Farm, Friends of the Historic Columbia River Highway, Bike Index, and Kiwanis Club. The Banks-Vernonia Trail alone received $5,000.
The Pioneer Century is a well-known ride in the greater Portland cycling community. In the past, the ride has been a major source of funds available for donations and other cycling community support activities. More recently, cyclist participation in the ride had been decreasing, and of course, the ride was suspended during the pandemic. The 2023 edition is the second post-pandemic ride. Re-establishing the ride has not been easy.
Along the 103 miles ride there are 3 rest stops (the shorter routes don't have all three). Each rest stop will be generously supplied with healthy, energy enhancing food. Support and gear, popularly referred to as SAG, will be provided. Permits have been obtained from the local government agencies and the required signs and roadway marking will be in place to supplement the various mapping options provided by PBC, links to which can be found here https://portlandbicyclingclub.com/pioneer/. And, the Club is trying to arrange for some out of the saddle fun: live music at the finish and at one of the rest stops. A request has been submitted for beautiful weather.
