Great Lake TaupA, home to IRONMAN 70.3 TaupA, is a popular tourist destination. Come for a great race but enjoy so much more! There are restaurants and accommodation options abound; a dynamic boutique retail area; numerous arts and craft galleries and plenty of natural hot pools for soothing your muscles after your race.
ROKA Swim Course Description
1.9km swim in the clear, fresh waters of Lake Taupo. Water temperature is normally around 16 - 18 degrees Celsius (approximately 64 degrees Fahrenheit). The course is a clockwise 1 lap rolling start swim.
Athletes will start on the beach adjacent to the Water Treatment Plant, opposite Tui St and Lake Terrace, swim 200m out into the lake before making a right turn to follow the buoys 800m north. You will then turn right, swim 50m towards the shore, then right again to complete the 700m leg parallel to the shore back towards the Water Treatment Plant, then left around the final buoy, swim 150m to the swim exit.
You will keep all swim buoys to your right except the last turn buoy which will be on your left. Athletes will have a 385m run up from the swim exit to T1.
Bike Course Description
90km bike course starts to the cheers of spectators before heading into the rolling farmland surrounding Taupo. The course is described as undulating with enough challenging sections to create a fair race.
The course will take athletes from T1 onto Rifle Range Rd, heading north then right onto Tauhara Rd, slight left onto Broadlands Rd, left at Centennial Dr to a U turn return to Broadlands Rd, left onto View Rd to a U turn returning to Broadlands Rd. You will then head back onto Broadlands Rd towards the turnaround at White Rd.
The return leg will be straight along Broadlands Rd towards Tauhara Rd, left onto Rifle Range Rd to the U turn at the bottom of Rifle Range Rd to start your 2 laps. (Repeat 1st lap) T2 will be on Kaimanawa Reserve just north of your second U turn on Rifle Range Rd.
HOKA Run Course Description
The run course is a three lap course following the shores of Lake Taupo.
Athletes will head out of T2 onto Rifle Range Rd, then left onto Lake Terrace, head out on Lake Terrace to the turnaround point at 2 Mile Bay, then head back via the Great Lake Path to the turn point on Lake Terrace opposite Titiraupenga St.
At the end of the third lap, turn left onto Rifle Range Rd, enter Kaimanawa Reserve to the finish line.
