ABOUT THIS RACE:
Race Starting Location:
320 Hodgdon Rd, Joplin, MO
The Breaking the Silence to Sexual Abuse 5K is a Running race in Joplin, Missouri consisting of a 5K.
The public is not fully aware of the magnitude of the problem that our children face. Child sexual abuse is one of the most prevalent health problems facing children. It's also preventable.
It is highly likely that you know a child who has or is being sexually abused. There are children who are silently bearing the burden of sexual abuse by themselves. It is also likely that you know an abuser. The greatest risk doesn't come from strangers but from friends and family.
The consequences to children and to our society begins immediately. Breaking the Silence to Sexual Abuse Run is an opportunity for our community to do what it's known for, coming together as one. Survivors may not disclose because they feel responsible, shamed, or they've been threatened. They may not understand what is happening to them or they feel that no one will believe them. Many carry this burden into adulthood. Imagine what it would feel like to have a community standing alongside each other, together, supporting those taking steps toward letting go of the silence and shame. This run is also about awareness for the community for the protection and prevention of sexual violence. As adults, it's our responsibility to prevent, recognize and react responsibly. This isn't just a run, it's an awareness that our children need for us to have.
All proceeds will go to Children's Center, a not-for-profit organization that provides a safe, child friendly setting for investigation of all child abuse in Southwest Missouri. The child advocacy center does forensic exams and interviews by trained professionals. They work with a team of law enforcement, Children's Division, juvenile office and medical professionals to determine the course of action that best serves the interest of the child. April is nationally recognized as Sexual Violence Awareness month. Come join our community in raising money for Children's Center and support the survivors of all sexual violence and learn how to protect our children.
Together we can stand for the voiceless.
