I joined the 8k training team which hands down was the best decision. It made running fun and gave a good layout of what I needed to do to get to be able to run an 8k. The expo was so great. It had a lot of information on upcoming races, had a lot of good runner networking, and was downright fun. The race itself was amazing. I utilized the UPS bag moving service, which in my opinion is so incredibly generous. There was so much excitement surrounding the race. The MC did a good job of announcing information, the race started promptly on time, and the course was really nice. It's a great way to see the heart of richmond. There were bands and groups along the course that really added to the excitement. I did not spend much time at the post race, however what I saw looked pretty good. The shirt design was somewhat disappointing for it to be the 40th birthday, however the quality of the shirt was phenomenal. I love my cup and my medal is hanging on my Christmas tree. The value of the race was spot on and very reasonable. Will be doing another race next year.

I had so much fun running this race! When I began training my goal was a sub 2 hour finish. I ran Hershey in October and happily met the goal and figured Richmond would be a similar time. However, the fun atmosphere, great people, and cold but sunny weather was the perfect combo for me to finish in 1:47:40! I beat my Hershey time by 5 minutes. Great race!

I did the 8k in 2015, the full in 2016, and the half this year and every time there has been great organization and a great course and the best swag. I would look into having a band or maybe better food/beer at the finish party to make it worth hanging out at.

This was a great course through beautiful scenery and great groups of people who provided everything from support to snacks. The downhill ending by the river is the best. The post-race party and swag was perfect. Only thing that sucked was waiting an hour outside in sub-30 temperatures. I'm not sure what they could do about that, but I was thankful for the sun.
"World's Friendliest Marathon" is a well deserved title - by , 11/18/2017

This was my first marathon, but I've run many other distance races. The race was well organized & well supported, with plenty of water/Powerade, gels & junk food stops! The pickle juice stop was one of my favorites. There were great crowds that came out & supported the runners, and I really appreciated the MTT coaches that cheered for everyone. I would absolutely recommend this race. Scenic course, good crowds, great swag!
Favorite local race - by , 11/17/2017

The Richmond race series is by far my favorite local race. I have been participating for the last 5 years, and have done both the half and full marathon. The course is great, the atmosphere throughout is always entertaining, with hardly any part of the race having zero spectators (people come from everywhere and line the entire course). I have no complaints about this race at all

Ran the Half Marathon in Richmond 2017. Its called the "Friendliest Marathon" in the US and totally agree. People is everywhere supporting as if they were your family. This year we were below freezing (26 F) and it didnt stop runners or crowd...i eill do it again next year with the full as my goal!!!!!

This is the fourth time I have crossed the finish line for the Richmond Half Marathon and I just signed up for 2018. This is one of my favorite annual events. The course is well planned and the volunteers and course marshals are top -notch!

This was a great course for someone running their first marathon. The spectators, the music, the Djs, the bands, it was all FANTASTIC, kept me going and distracted me when I began thinking that I wouldn’t make it! Oh, the cold sucked! First marathon in the books! Job well done!
Golf balls in my shoes! - by , 11/15/2017

Oh, what a wonderful race. Having grown up in Richmond, Marathon Day has always been part of my Fall, but this was my first time participating. I absolutely loved it and had a huge grin on my face after my toes thawed two miles in. Those first two miles felt like having a golf ball in each shoe under my toes. I even stopped to see if I'd stepped on something and it was stuck to my shoe. It took about two miles as they slowly thawed, but they did thaw. Major lessons learned and I'll definitely do it again!
8K Considerations - by , 11/14/2017
3/ 3stars
I’ve run the 8K twice and both times ran in 25° temps. Outside waiting for start in minimal sunshine and freezing temps is ideal. The half and full runners start and end in warmer temps mostly because they start later. I finished the race at 27° and it was COLD. I suggest the 8K be started at 0745 or even 0730 to allow some minimal warm up to occur. Change the route for the 8K if needed to accommodate all races.

Although the temperature at the start was brutally cold (24F) there were plenty of spectators out to cheer on the runners. This race is always fun and well organized. The avg. temp of 28F was the coldest marathon I have run to date. For me, too cold. I feel like there is certainly a sweet spot for temperature for optimal performance. 10 degrees warmer and this would have been much more enjoyable. I saw plenty of finishers that had their best race and several (me included) that had a PW. I’m sure there is a scientist out there that can explain how molecules change with temperature, and can possibly explain why my feet hurt so bad. I feel like the compound of my shoes never softened and my feet and knees took a severe pounding. Suffice to say, 18 miles in and my legs were toast. Even with the temps below freezing (which is what it is) this is still my favorite race and I wouldn’t miss it as long as I’m healthy.
Great first half - by , 11/14/2017

Running a half marathon was something I never really thought I could do until recently.. And used to wonder why people would pay quite a bit of money to do something they could do any day for free (run) anyway.. And I definitely understand now. This was the first time I trained for a specific goal other than weight loss and it was really pretty amazing and a huge part of my daily life the past couple months. The run itself was pretty fabulous despite being a lot colder than I had hoped. The course was scenic/beautiful and I very much appreciated seeing how many residents came out to support. I loved it! Reaching that goal that seemed impossible before and being in the whole environment was so fun.
