Swim
The 3.8 km (2.4 mile) swim takes place at Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen.
1 - Age Group athletes only
As part of IRONMAN ongoing race development and improvements, IRONMAN LANZAROTE will be using a aRolling Swim Startai¿½.
This method of start has been introduced into all IRONMAN events across the globe with positive feedback and outcomes.
2 - What is a rolling start?
Athletes are set off in one continuous line for the swim start. It will take approximately 30 minutes to get the entire field across the swim start line. In effect, this will create a atime trialai¿½ dynamic for the race and for the determination of the final results.
Each athlete individual race time will start when they cross the swim start-timing mat, under the swim start arch.
3 - How does this work?
The (on-shore) pre swim start area will be divided into starting zones/corals:
1. 07:00 a" PRO M
2. 07:05 a" PRO F
3. 07:07 a" PC Open.
4. 07:10 a" AG.
Age Group athletes will seed themselves into these zones/corals based on their predicted swim time for the 3.8km course.
Age groups swim zone/corals:
07:10 - <60`
07:12 a" 60Ai¿½ - 70Ai¿½
07:14 a" 70Ai¿½- 80Ai¿½
07:16 a" 80Ai¿½- 90Ai¿½
07:18 a" 90Ai¿½ - 120Ai¿½
07:20 - >120Ai¿½
* The swim cut off time: 2:20hrs after individual start.
Groups will commence a rolling start based on these times.
Athletes timing chips will activate once they cross-designated swim start timing mat, at the entry ramp to the swim course.
4. Why change to a rolling start?
It is part of the IRONMAN Global Swim Smart initiative aimed at increasing safety and reducing anxiety in the swim.
It allows a single lap swim course, reducing congestion. It allows athletes to swim at their own ability and improve the overall swim experience. We have received positive feedback and results from all the IRONMAN races around the world.
