The Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney is a Triathlon race in Sydney, consisting of a Half Ironman.
Explore amazing Sydney
From the iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge to the stunning beaches and breathtaking Blue Mountains ... Sydney is the perfect destination to stay and play and the Sydney International Regatta Centre is the perfect playing field for a world-class IRONMAN 70.3.
Swim
1.9km - The one-lap swim takes place in the man-made, sheltered Penrith Lake, home to the 2000 Olympic Sydney International Regatta Centre (SIRC). The iconic and purpose-built facility caters nicely for athletes and supporting spectators, as the rectangular-shaped course starts in front of the grandstand, making it the perfect swim course for a nervous swimmer. Once passing the grandstand again on the way back towards the swim finish, athletes will swim under the bridge, where they exit to Transition.
Pontoon Start
All age group & team athletes will start from a pontoon in the main competition lake.
Athletes can either dive or slide into the water after crossing the start line/timing mat.
Physically Challenged Open/Exhibition Division starts will remain as mass deep water starts.
Swim Course & Exit
The last 200m of the swim course will head under the iconic Olympic Bridge and athletes will exit directly into transition from the warm up lake boat ramp.
Wetsuits
A provisional wetsuit ruling will be posted at Athlete Check-In and Event Information on Saturday from 11am. The official wetsuit ruling will be announced race morning by the commentary team.
As was the case at last year's event, there is a chance that cooler air & water temperatures could mean a Wetsuit Mandatory swim. As per Triathlon Australia's race rules, if the water temperature is lower than 22C and the air temperature is lower than 15C, then the adjusted value is to decrease the measured water temperature according to the chart on page 10 of the TA rules.
Please be prepared for a mandatory wetsuit swim ruling. This is a safety measure; if you are not in a wetsuit on Race Day, you cannot start your race.
A final water temperature reading will be taken on race morning and the wetsuit ruling will be communicated on social media, app notification, at transition and at swim start.
It is recommended you travel prepared and bring a wetsuit just in case. You can buy one from a local retailer or from our onsite IRONMAN merchandise store.
Bike
90km -
Athletes will take in scenic views of the Blue Mountains and roll through the countryside on the two-lap bike course.
Cyclists will exit transition along the regatta, where they'll turn left to loop around Penrith Whitewater Stadium. Once the loop is complete, athletes will exit the precinct via McCarthys Ln, turning left onto Castlereagh Rd. Athletes will continue along this road past the 15K mark and Godolphin Stables, where they'll then make a U-turn further along Castlereagh Rd.
After the U-turn, athletes will turn left entering Brooks Ln, where they'll pass the 30K mark along Wilshire Rd. Riders will then turn left onto Jockbett Rd, following onto The Driftway where two U-turns will take place. Athletes will then follow the same path back until a left turn onto Castlereagh Rd again, where riders will continue back to the precinct. The second lap begins with the second loop around Penrith Whitewater Stadium and finishes back along the regatta towards transition. Technical turns will allow for a challenge, however the smooth road surfaces will see fast course times as athletes head to the run course.
Run
The 21.1km HOKA run course is set at the base of the stunning Blue Mountains and encircles the iconic Sydney International Regatta Centre (SIRC). Athletes will start their run by heading out of Transition, over the bridge, and turning right at car park Gate A to head up Old Castlereagh Rd. With views of the Blue Mountains to the West, participants will turn around at the Northern point of Old Castlereagh Rd to head back the way they came passing the first Run Aid Station (R1) and following the signed course until they reach the water's edge of SIRC.
At this point on the course, athletes will make a U-Turn to head back towards Transition to start their next loop; on the third approach to the Transition U-Turn, athletes will continue straight through to start their victory lap of SIRC. On their approach to the finish line, athletes will be cheered by spectators lining the footpaths to give them that extra boost they need to finish strong before they hit the stadium-like atmosphere at the finish chute.
The close and compact 3-lap course will create a stadium-like atmosphere for all to enjoy.
