Hilo to Volcano ultra-marathon and relay is a challenging 50 K (31 mile) route which begins at Coconut Island parking area in Hilo (sea level) and ends at Cooper Center in Volcano (almost 4,000 ft.) Runners choosing to run the event solo will need to provide their own support vehicles and return ride. There are a few stores, bathrooms, and water sources available along the highway if needed. The run is entirely on paved roads, primarily Highway 11. There is a 7 hour and 30 minute cut-off time to finish the run. Runners who cannot run in that time may choose to start early. They will be official finishers, but not eligible for place awards if they start early
Official relay teams consist of 3 members. The first runner goes to the 2 mile marker in front of Pu'ainako Center KTA, for a total of 2.7 miles. All subsequent changes occur at the even mile markers all the way up to Volcano. Each runner runs 5 legs of the race. The final runner will run from a marked point on Wright Road to the finish for 2.3 miles. Relay teams of more than 3 members are welcome to participate, but are not eligible for awards.
All solo runners receive a long-sleeve tech shirt and finishers medal, provided they finish. Relay teams receive the event T-shirt for each member and division medals if placing 1st or 2nd. Relay teams are divided into these groups: high school, open, and masters (all over 40).
